NEW SHIFT CHANGE NOW SESSION SET FOR FEB. 16
Late-breaking industry news from the good folks at @shiftchangenow, who will be hosting the latest session of their ongoing ‘Speakers For Change’ series via Zoom this Tuesday, February 16:
“We can all agree the hospitality industry has suffered a lot during this pandemic. With our favourite small and local restaurants closing, businesses have been forced to adapt to new rules and find innovative solutions in order to prosper. It hasn’t been easy but we would love to give a round of applause to the @westernliving Foodies of The Year 2021 finalists 👏.
Through the toughest of times these individuals have shed light in the hospitality industry and shown the pandemic who is boss! Superbaba owner Abdallah El Chami @thedallah is among that list of 40 tastemakers, innovators and changemakers that have made their mark on the industry.
In this month’s session of Shift Change, we are discussing the impact of COVID-19 on the restaurant community and the opportunity to improve work places. This Q&A session will explore unfair workplace practices that is normalized and address systemic issues within the industry.
We invite everyone to join us this Tuesday, February 16 at 3 pm PST for this free session with Dallah. Check out the link in @shiftchangenow’s bio to take part!”

In a recent article for @montecristo_mag, the great Vancouver wordsmith @lee.f.man talks about the importance of the occasion, how COVID restrictions have put a damper on Chinese New Year celebrations this year and details how local Cantonese chefs and restaurants are pivoting to feature a traditional pun choi dish for takeout as well as dine-in.
“As with Christmas and Diwali, Chinese New Year is a vital affirmation fo the bonds of family and community,” he writes. “There is perhaps no single meal more important to the Chinese calendar than the Lunar New year’s Eve dinner … This year, Chinese New years gatherings may be smaller, but the meals will still be deliciously meaningful.”
