In Cantonese, ‘sifu’ is a title for and role of a skillful person or a master.

It’s the honorific applied to Chinese barbecue master Jack Tsoi, the Chef-Owner of East Court and Mike’s BBQ — a dining staple of the Scarborough, ON area for 25+ years that specializes in whole-hog Chinese and Filipino lechon takeout and catering.

Recently, East Court and Mike's BBQ was dubbed one of the ‘10 Best Restaurants in Scarborough for Takeout and Delivery’ by Toronto Life. Instead of resting on its laurels, the restaurant parlayed the accolade into a way to urge people to continue supporting the Chinatown district as well as small and independent BIPOC businesses in the area.

The Province officially rolled out a new measure that temporarily allows establishments across BC to purchase beer, wine and spirits at wholesale rather than liquor store retail prices.

Previously, hospitality licensees (including restaurants, pubs and tourism operators with liquor licences) paid full retail price (wholesale, plus a markup set by the LDB) on most liquor purchases.

The new regulation could positively boost the bottom line for 8,500 restaurants and pubs that employ more than 190,000 people across the province.
