A Waffle Love Story
Some sage words of gratitude from Robbie Kane, the inimitable Owner and consummate host at Vancouver’s beloved brunch (and now dinner!) institution @medinacafe.
Our pal and local small business supporter @yushiin_labo_ recently gave a heartfelt shout out to Robbie via his account. Ex-photographer Robbie was born and grew up in Toronto. He landed his first job as a dishwasher and kept working as a server in restaurants to supplement his income while working in the film industry. When he moved to Vancouver in 2003, he joined @chambar_restaurant for three years before opening his own restaurant. @medinacafe was originally going to be called ‘Gypsy’ in loving memory of his departed dog, but he decided to change the name to ‘Medina’ at the last minute. Two weeks after it opened in 2008, a woman saw the sign, and came inside and said “My name is Medina!”. Long story short, boy met girl, they fell in love and Medina has now been his wife for 12 years. The restaurant quickly became a pioneer of the city’s brunch culture. They are always known for their exceptional brunch, Belgian waffles and awesome coffee @49th .
Also known for a long line up, the pandemic made them pivot and begin accepting reservations for the first time. More exciting news from this Vancouver landmark came recently with the addition of ‘Medina After Dark’ dinner services Thursdays through Saturdays.
