2020 Foodservice Facts Report

News — some good, some of the not-so-good variety — on the current state of the foodservice and hospitality industry from Restaurants Canada this past week as the national advocacy group released its 2020 Foodservice Facts Report.

Not-so-good news first: In 2019, the Canadian industry generated more than $93 billion in sales and was on track to surpass $100 billion in 2021, but due to the pandemic the industry is predicted to lose between $21.7 and $44.8 billion in annual sales in 2020.

Now, the good news: some pre-COVID industry trends such as the rise of ‘ghost kitchens’ (brands that operate with no storefront and focus entirely on delivery through mobile and online platforms) were accelerated and may present opportunities to restaurants that have the ability to continue pivoting their business model moving forward.
