Vancouver-based businesses to support now
Earlier this week, the Afrocentric, plant-based food producer Kula Kitchen put together a list of Black-owned businesses and other resources many of us can use as we make an earnest effort to educate ourselves, open our hearts and show empathy for those who struggle with injustice, inequality and racism on a daily basis.
The post encouraged Kula’s non-Black supporters to do their research and think about anti-Blackness: “What do you know about it? How have you contributed? What can you do?”
The Heartbreak Chef
In our ongoing efforts to champion restaurateurs, chefs and entrepreneurs in the Black community and amplify their voices in a meaningful way, we are shining a spotlight today on Toronto’s Jerome Robinson aka the Heartbreak Chef.
Jerome was recently included on a list of 100 Black-owned businesses you can support in the Toronto compiled by BlogTO.
"People have always powered change."
This from Justin Tisdall, Co-Owner of Vancouver’s Juke Fried Chicken and Beetbox. It’s exactly the kind of tone and attitude we want to strike and amplify right now — and going forward — and we encourage others to do the same.
His team at Juke has launched ‘Industry Mondays Restaurant Relief Hour’, where they donate 100% of sales from 5 to 6 pm every Monday to a weekly rotating charity. This past Monday, the team donated the proceeds to Know Your Rights Camp — a free campaign funded by Colin Kaepernick to raise awareness among black and brown youth about self-empowerment and how to interact with law enforcement.
